Choose the type of poultry bird

Initially, you can start small poultry farms by selecting 2 to 3 poultry birds and then adding more birds as the business grows. Poultry farmers mostly raise chickens, ducks, geese, quails, peacocks, pigeons, and turkeys as layers.

Locate the poultry farm

It is remembered that, build your poultry farm a short distance from the city to get cheap land and labor. The selected location must have all the necessary facilities. Don’t move the farm too far from the nearest town. Choose a town with your target customers in mind.

When you think about choosing your farm area, you must have all the necessary facilities for your poultry such as water, drainage, electricity supply, etc. Once you have selected the desired area for your poultry farm, you need to divide the area into three different parts which are;

  • Floor space
  • Feeder space
  • Water space

and all three depending on the need of the bird on which you choose.

Housing management for poultry farming in Uttar Pradesh

Good and well-organized housing plays an important role in raising all kinds of poultry birds. Some birds grow and live happily on the floors of chicken houses and some in cages. You have to make a suitable home according to the type of birds you have and make sure that they have all the necessary facilities.

Deep Litter System – The deep litter system is used to place birds on a litter floor, which is covered with a variety of agricultural materials, such as rice husk, sawdust, groundnut hulls, wood shavings, and dried leaves, depending on their availability. Initially, the depth of agricultural material is about 5 to 6 cm, and then as the size of the bird increases, it increases by another 5 to 6 cm.

In the case of broilers from where they go for slaughter, the birds can stay on the system for up to six weeks. In the case of crusts, they live up to 18 weeks of age or can be transferred to cages. Most broilers are housed in deep garbage sheds. Food and water are supplied manually on small farms and with automated equipment on large farms.

Cage system – The cage system is a widely used system for commercial layers, breeder layers, and late even broiler breeders. Birds are usually kept in cages on open platforms in open sheds. These cages are arranged in rows. Each cage houses three or four birds with drinking water and feeding. The water is supplied by a nipple mounted on a closed pipe at the height of the bird’s head.

These hens should be sold after laying eggs throughout the year as their ability to lay eggs is reduced which reduces the profit margin. About 65-70% of poultry farming is spent on poultry feed. Therefore, the weeding and weaning of hens should be equal.

Poultry farming importance in Uttar Pradesh

Poultry rearing provides the best employment opportunities to the unemployed or unemployed people of rural communities. In addition, the consumption of chicken meat is an important source of protein which helps in meeting the nutritional needs of the rural population. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, poultry farm owners want the state government to intervene soon and save their businesses, which they say are being affected by several factors.

The growth rate depends not only on production but also on increasing consumption. Statistical surveys show that consumption of eggs and meat has increased in those states where their production is higher. Population growth, lifestyle changes, changes in eating habits, increase in per capita income, urbanization, increase in health awareness, and reduction in age, etc., are all contributing factors in increasing the production of both eggs and meat.

Bundelkhand is situated between the Vindhya Range in the south and the Indo-Gangetic in the north, on a slightly sloping upland, distinguished by the barren hilly terrain with sparse vegetation. Bundelkhand is a drought-prone region and the frequency and severity of drought have increased. The entire Bundelkhand region is very hot in summer and usually very cold. Improved indigenous varieties of chicken (CARI-Nirbheek, UPCARI, HITCARI, CARI-Shyama, and CARI-Debendra) also adapted well to the severe climatic conditions of the Bundelkhand region.

The Uttar Pradesh government has commercial layer farming schemes with 10,000 and 30,000 birds. The project cost of one unit is approximately Rs. 70 lakhs and Rs. 180.00 lakhs (excluding land value) for 10,000 and 30,000 laying bird units respectively. Bank loans are 70% (49 and 126 million). The margin money is 30% (Rs. 21 lakhs and Rs. 54 lakhs). The State Government will provide a 10% interest rebate to the bank on the loan amount for five years (maximum Rs. 40.00 lakhs) and the remaining amount of interest will be borne by the business itself. Smaller layered units are not generally viable. Larger units purchase large quantities of raw materials, prepare their feed, and purchase feed components during egg harvesting and sale, providing even higher revenue over long distances.

This is mainly due to the increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of maize and soybeans, which are used as poultry feed. Other reasons include rising electricity, transportation, labor, and medicine prices. Poultry farms where chickens are reared mainly to lay eggs are called ‘layer farms’.

Birds are colloquially called ‘layer’ or ‘egg’. A bird usually lays one egg a day. Livestock and dairy development in the form of small-scale industries are among the priorities of the present government. Poultry is developing steadily in the state. Despite the availability of maize grains, other components of poultry feed, abundant manpower, large market, tremendous increase in consumption of poultry products.
