Canadian police are looking for two men after officers discovered 10 people dead and 15 injured from stabbings in 13 locations in the western province of Saskatchewan.
This marks one of Canada’s deadliest stabbing sprees and comes over two years after the worst murder rampage in the country’s history when a gunman in the eastern province of Nova Scotia killed 22 people in a 14-hour rampage.
“It is horrific what has occurred in our province today,” said Rhonda Blackmore, assistant commissioner for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Saskatchewan.
RCMP said it received reports of stabbings early Sunday morning in the James Smith Cree Nation, an indigenous community roughly 300 miles north of Montana. Later Sunday morning, it extended a security alert to the province of Saskatchewan, following reports of stabbings in other parts of the province, which shares a border with Montana and North Dakota. It is home to over one million people, but in terms of geography it covers an area slightly smaller than Texas.
Police said at a Sunday afternoon press conference they believe the suspects were last spotted in Regina, Saskatchewan, and traveling in a black Nissan sport-utility vehicle. Police urged the city’s residents to not leave secure areas and use caution in allowing people into their residences.
Police said they were looking for Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson. Ms. Blackmore said they were trying to determine the relationship between the two suspects.
Police said 10 people are dead and at least 15 injured, adding it is possible other victims might have transported themselves to area hospitals.
“We believe some of the victims may have been targeted by the suspects, and others have been attacked randomly,” Ms. Blackmore said. “To speak to a motive would be extremely difficult at this point… We need everyone in the province to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
She added police in the neighboring provinces of Alberta and Manitoba are assisting in the investigation. Ms. Blackmore said there is no indication the suspects have left Saskatchewan. “We can’t say with 100% certainty where they are right now.”
Canadian crime data indicate that stabbings are the second-most common form of homicide, following shootings. Stabbings accounted for nearly a third of Canadian homicides in 2021, Statistics Canada said.
